So after the murder of Inês in 1355, at the behest of her father, King Afonso IV, Pedro took the throne and declared Inês as queen posthumously. He ordered her corpse to be exhumed, crowning it and forcing the courtiers to pay homage to the new queen who, under pain of death, should kiss her hand. The episode is known as the "Crowning of the Corpses". The story of love and tragedy between Pedro and Inês inspired many tales, poems and literary pieces, remaining as a symbol of passion and suffering throughout the centuries in Portuguese culture.
